When Betsy Baker Dietz opened Betsy’s Place last October, she knew that she wanted it to be all about family. Both her family and yours. So she stocked the shelves with educational, fun toys that families can play together and asked her sister to run the shop.

Betsy and her sister, Belinda Baker, were born and raised in Danville. Betsy moved to the Washington D.C. area over 20 years ago but still has her roots in Danville.

“I love Danville. My family is still here. I had to move away for a job opportunity but I still consider Danville my hometown,” says Betsy.

So when Betsy wanted to open her children’s shop, she knew that she wanted it to be in Danville and she knew Belinda was the perfect one to run it.

The shop has unusual items such as backpacks with stuffed animals attached with Velcro so children can easily carry them when they are done playing. “These were very popular at Christmastime,” said Belinda.

One game available there is called Life Stories and is meant for children to play with their grandparents so they can learn about their life.

And the shelves are stocked full with many games that make learning geography and math fun. Betsy explained that she wanted children to know that there was a big world outside their doors. She knows all about that because she had the exceptional opportunity to be Senator Robert Byrd’s assistant until his passing last year.

Both girls attended Danville schools and Belinda recounts how their second grade teacher came in recently. She said that Mrs. Floyd seemed to really like the shop. That made both women happy.

The store also carries some name brand items for mom and dad including Crabtree and Evelyn and Life is Good. But Belinda will remind you that the store is really about the children and families.

Betsy’s Place is located at 3000 Riverside Drive in Danville just past Mount Cross Road
